Mechanism of Action

Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. It binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria, thereby preventing the formation of functional ribosomes and inhibiting protein synthesis. This ultimately leads to bacterial cell death.

Application

Azithromycin tablets are used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including:

• Respiratory Tract Infections: Such as acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis caused by Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, or Streptococcus pneumoniae.
• Community-Acquired Pneumonia: Caused by Chlamydophila pneumoniae, H. influenzae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, or S. pneumoniae.
• Acute Otitis Media: Caused by H. influenzae, M. catarrhalis, or S. pneumoniae.
• Acute Bacterial Sinusitis: Caused by H. influenzae, M. catarrhalis, or S. pneumoniae.
• Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis: Caused by Streptococcus pyogenes.
• Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Caused by Staphylococcus aureus, S. pyogenes, or Streptococcus agalactiae.
• Urinary Tract Infections: Caused by Chlamydia trachomatis or Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
• Genital Ulcer Disease (Chancroid): Caused by Haemophilus ducreyi.

Dosage Instructions

The dosage of azithromycin tablets depends on the type and severity of the infection. General guidelines include:

• Adults:Pneumonia and Bronchitis: 500 mg on the first day, followed by 250 mg once daily for 4 days (total 5 days) .Chlamydia or Gonorrhea: A single dose of 1,000 mg .
• Children:Acute Otitis Media: 30 mg/kg (maximum 1,000 mg) as a single dose .Other Infections: Dosage varies based on the specific infection and the child's weight .
• It is crucial to follow the prescribed dosage and duration of treatment to ensure effective eradication of the infection and to minimize the risk of developing antibiotic resistance.

Storage

Azithromycin tablets should be stored in a tightly closed container in a dry place. Avoid excessive light and moisture.
