Albendazole Tablets: Effective Antiparasitic Solution

Mechanism of Action

Albendazole exerts its therapeutic effects primarily through its active metabolite, albendazole sulfoxide. This metabolite selectively disrupts the microtubule structures within the cells of parasites, particularly those in the intestinal cells and cortical layers. By binding to the β-tubulin subunits in the parasite's microtubules, it inhibits microtubule polymerization, thereby interfering with the intracellular transport and nutrient absorption of the parasites. Additionally, albendazole reduces the uptake of glucose by parasites, depleting their glycogen reserves, which ultimately leads to energy exhaustion, paralysis, and death of the parasites.

At higher concentrations, albendazole can also inhibit key metabolic enzymes, such as malate dehydrogenase and fumarate reductase, disrupting the metabolic pathways of parasites and further reducing ATP production. This leads to the inability of parasites to maintain normal physiological functions. This mechanism of action allows albendazole to be effective against a wide range of parasites while having minimal impact on host cells.

Application

Albendazole tablets are a broad-spectrum antiparasitic medication, widely used to treat various parasitic infections. The main applications include:

• Ascariasis (Jiggerworm Infection): For treating intestinal infections caused by roundworms.
• Hookworm Infection: Effective against hookworm infections.
• Trichuriasis (Whipworm Infection): Used to treat whipworm infections.
• Enterobiasis (Pinworm Infection): For treating pinworm infections.
• Taeniasis (Tapeworm Infection): Including infections caused by pork tapeworm (Taenia solium) and beef tapeworm (Taenia saginata).
• Cysticercosis: Including neurocysticercosis, used to treat brain infections caused by the larvae of pork tapeworm.
• Hydatid Disease: For treating cystic echinococcosis caused by Echinococcus granulosus, which affects the liver, lungs, and peritoneum.
• Additionally, albendazole is used to treat other parasitic infections, such as microsporidiosis.

Dosage Instructions

The dosage of albendazole tablets varies depending on the type of infection and the patient's age:

• Ascariasis, Hookworm Infection, Trichuriasis, Enterobiasis: Adults and children over 2 years old, a single dose of 400 mg, taken on an empty stomach.
• Taeniasis: Adults and children over 2 years old, 400 mg once daily for 3 consecutive days, taken on an empty stomach.
• Cysticercosis: Adults, 400 mg twice daily for 15 to 30 days.
• Hydatid Disease: Adults, 400 mg twice daily for 28 days, with the course repeated if necessary.
• Albendazole has poor absorption and is recommended to be taken with a high-fat meal to enhance bioavailability. Additionally, since albendazole is metabolized by the cytochrome P450 system, caution should be exercised when used in combination with other drugs, such as phenobarbital, phenytoin, rifampin, and carbamazepine, as these drugs may reduce the concentration of albendazole.

Storage

Albendazole tablets should be stored in a tightly closed container, kept in a dry and cool place, and protected from direct sunlight. They are typically recommended to be stored at room temperature (15°C to 30°C).
